Animal Within- Illustration Series

This series was inspired by surrealist art. The idea began with a simple idea to illustrate a portrait encompassing my identity. I chose a tiger as a representation of my inner strength and resilience in life. After completing this portrait I decided to elaborate on this concept and illustrate inner animals for people based on how they looked. I found portraits online and illustrated corresponding animals to match their expression and character.

Ideation Process

This series began as a singular portrait project that developed into a series. Here are the initial sketches for how I planned to merge the tiger and my portrait together.

I experimented with different angles of my face as well as different expressions to emulate that of a tiger. Ultimately a tiger's roar is what I decided worked best.

Creating the Series

The images of people were sampled from portraits of random people.  I then created corresponding animals that were representative of their expressions and physical appearance.

The addition of the goopy texture that appears as the body is split in half was inspired by melty cheese on pizza and the effect you get when splitting 2 pieces of cheesy pizza apart.
